MIRC Workshop - How to Make Change: Policy and Advocacy in the Music Industry


This discussion and workshop will cover how to turn policy objectives into political realities. Sam and Satu will cover the basics of policymaking across all levels of government, offering insights into how to (and how not to) work with government to advocate for policy goals. This workshop will also cover practical skills like writing submissions and identifying stakeholders to build support for policy recommendations. Participants will leave equipped to navigate the often difficult world of political advocacy as it relates to the music, creative and cultural industries. 

Satu Teppo is a PhD Candidate at the University of South Australia with research interests in emerging cultural policy practices and the politics of cultural policymaking. She has extensive experience in working in the arts – in arts organisations, the public sector and as a Ministerial Adviser. 

Sam Whiting is a Vice-Chancellor’s Senior Research Fellow at RMIT. He previously served on West Torrens City Council, the South Australian ‘Artists at Work’ Taskforce and the Arts Industry Council of South Australia’s executive. Sam has a long history of working with government, as an advocate, academic, and elected member.
